Week Three Question

Question:  I notice at events drivers always have to have an entourage of people around them. I was wondering that in your everyday life if you always have to have someone with you, say to protect you while you are out just shopping at a store? Can you feel comfortable going normal everyday places like the grocery store or restaurant by yourself, or do you need someone to do your shopping and run errand for you?

Answer:  At the track you'll typically see a manager, publicist and a bus driver around drivers. That's the support staff we have in place to make everything go smoothly. From logistics, to interviews, to sponsor obligations, to cooking to whatever else happens in a day those are the three guys that make it happen. The manager and bus driver works for the driver and the publicist typically works for the team or sponsor. So if you often see the same folks on TV in interviews when they are interviewing a particular driver that's why.

Appearances, or events, are a totally different ballgame. You may see the same three folks at those as well but believe it or not we don't have a lot of control over appearances. In my case, my business manager takes care of managing my calendar and schedules. He goes with me to 95% of appearances whether they be at the track or away from the track. The company or folks that set up the appearance decide the location, time and event agenda. They'll typically have a sponsorship or marketing team in place to make sure the event goes to their liking.

As far as everyday life, I go about it just like you do. I go out and about to eat, shop and have fun just like everyone else. We have our favorite places to eat and hang out in almost every town. It's not uncommon to run into me and DJ at some of our local restaurants around the tracks.

I have some friends that are big boys like Big John and Fat Cat. So I'm sure people think they are security if they see them out with me out and recognize me. But, they aren't. They are just friends of mine that happen to be big boys. I hope that answered your question.
